Plated jewellery lasts a long time if you treat it right and dies quickly if you do not. None of this is complicated — it is four habits, and they are the difference between a piece lasting six months and lasting years.
The four rules
- Last on, first off. Put jewellery on after perfume, lotion, hairspray and makeup. Take it off before you take anything else off.
- Keep it dry. No showers, no swimming pools, no sea, no washing up. Chlorine and saltwater strip plating faster than anything else on this list.
- Take it off to sleep. Eight hours of friction against a pillow does more damage than a full day of wear, and it is how chains snap.
- Store it separately. Pieces scratch each other in a jumble. Keep each one in its own pouch, dry, out of direct sunlight.
Cleaning
Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each wear. That is genuinely it.
Do not use silver polish, polishing cloths, jewellery dips or ultrasonic cleaners on plated pieces — all of them are abrasive and will take the plating straight off. If a piece needs more than a dry wipe, use a barely damp cloth and dry it immediately.
Specific pieces
Herringbone chains kink permanently if folded or twisted. Store flat, never knotted, never balled up in a pocket.
Pearls are the most delicate thing we sell. Perfume and hairspray damage the surface and it cannot be undone. Wipe with a dry cloth only — never a polishing cloth.
Stone-set pieces can loosen over time. Check the settings every few months and stop wearing anything that rattles until it is fixed.
Watches are splash-resistant, not waterproof. Take them off before washing your hands.
